Record Store Day is a celebration of nearly 1000 unique and independently owned record stores all over the continental US as well as thousands of similar stores all over the world. RecordStoreDay.com proudly boasts participation from every continent except Antarctica.

The idea was conceived in 2007 and takes place once a year on the third Saturday every April. Festivities often include cook-outs, face painting, and each store participating in Record Store Day carries special vinyl and CD releases along with various promotional products for the day. Each store hosts their own party for the day, showcasing the true individuality of each store and the place it holds in its community.

According to RecordStoreDay.com, “a participating store is defined as a standalone brick and mortar retailer whose main primary business focuses on a physical store location, whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation. (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores—not online retailers or corporate behemoths).”
